Unlocking AI for Beginners: 5 Game-Changing Basics You Can Use Today

Hey there,

AI is no longer just a buzzword—it’s a ability that can transform how you work, think, and even run your business. But here’s the thing: most beginners don’t know where to start. That’s why I’m breaking down the basics of AI in a way that’s easy to understand and, more importantly, actionable.

Here’s what you need to know to get started with AI and make it work for you:

1. The 3 Types of AI Abilities You’ll Encounter

Not all AI abilities are created equal. They fall into three main categories:

  • Standalone AI Abilities: These are apps or platforms that work independently. Think of abilities like ChatGPT, MidJourney, or Otter AI. They’re perfect for tasks like brainstorming ideas, generating visuals, or transcribing meetings. You can access them directly through their websites or apps without needing to integrate them into other software.

  • Integrated AI Features: These are AI enhancements built into abilities you already use. For example, Google Docs and Slides now have AI features (like Google Gemini) that can help you write better or create visuals directly within the app.

  • Custom AI Solutions: These are tailor-made abilities designed to solve specific problems. For instance, hospitals use custom AI to detect diseases like sepsis, and businesses use it to predict customer needs. The best part? These solutions are often designed to be user-friendly, so you don’t need to be a tech expert to use them.

2. Prompt Engineering: The Key to Getting Better Results

AI is only as good as the instructions you give it. This is where “prompt engineering” comes in.

Think of it like this: if your vegetarian friend asks for restaurant recommendations, you’ll naturally suggest vegetarian-friendly places, even if they don’t explicitly say so. AI, however, needs you to spell out that context.

For example, if you’re brainstorming negotiation strategies with an AI ability, don’t just say, “Help me negotiate a raise.” Instead, provide context like:

  • Last year’s raise percentage.

  • Your performance metrics.

  • Industry standards for raises.

The more context you provide, the better the AI’s output will be.

3. Zero Shot vs. Few Shot Prompting: How to Guide AI

When asking AI for help, the way you frame your request matters.

  • Zero Shot Prompting: You ask the AI to perform a task without giving any examples. For instance, “Write me a pickup line for Bumble.”

  • Few Shot Prompting: You provide 2-3 examples to guide the AI. For example, “Write me a pickup line for Bumble. Here are two examples that worked well: [Example 1] and [Example 2].”

The more relevant examples you provide, the more tailored and accurate the AI’s response will be.

4. Chain of Thought Prompting: Break Down Complex Tasks

When tackling big tasks, don’t ask AI to do everything at once. Instead, break it into smaller steps.

For example, if you’re writing a cover letter:

  1. Start by asking the AI to write an attention-grabbing opening paragraph.

  2. Once you’re happy with that, ask it to write the body paragraph.

  3. Finally, ask for a closing paragraph.

This step-by-step approach ensures higher-quality results and gives you more control over the final output.

5. Know AI’s Limitations

AI is powerful, but it’s not perfect. Here are three key limitations to keep in mind:

  • Bias in Training Data: If the AI was trained on biased data, its output might reflect that bias. For example, a text-to-image AI trained on minimalistic designs might struggle to create bold, flashy visuals.

  • Outdated Information: Many AI models have a cutoff date for their training data, so they might not know about recent events or trends.

  • Hallucinations: Sometimes, AI just makes things up. This can be useful for brainstorming but dangerous for high-stakes tasks like health advice or financial planning. Always double-check the AI’s output.

Why This Matters for Your Business

Whether you’re a solopreneur, part of a team, or just someone looking to save time, understanding these basics can help you:

  • Streamline your workflow.

  • Make smarter decisions.

  • Stay ahead of the competition.

For example, you could use AI to:

  • Generate content ideas for your blog or social media.

  • Analyze customer data to predict trends.

  • Automate repetitive tasks like scheduling or data entry.
