🎬Hollywood’s AI Hype Fell Flat in 2025

What: Hollywood dove headfirst into generative AI this year, partnering with firms like OpenAI, launching AI-dubbed anime, and even greenlighting AI-written shows. Yet, nearly every project felt rushed, sloppy, or underwhelming, with little to show for the billions invested.
Why: Studios hoped AI would slash production costs and speed up workflows, but the tech isn’t ready for prime time. Poor dubs, inaccurate recaps, and shallow “AI entertainment” only frustrated audiences and exposed the gap between hype and reality.
Impact: As Disney and Netflix double down, the industry risks flooding screens with low-effort content. Will audiences accept AI “slop” just because execs love a cost-cutting shortcut?
2025 was the year Hollywood bet big on AI and came up mostly empty-handed. With Disney planning an entire AI-generated section on its streaming platform, one question looms: Are we headed for a golden age of creativity… or a wasteland of lazy content?

Over the next year, Roku predicts that 100% of the streaming audience will see ads. For growth marketers in 2026, CTV will remain an important “safe space” as AI creates widespread disruption in the search and social channels. Plus, easier access to self-serve CTV ad buying tools and targeting options will lead to a surge in locally-targeted streaming campaigns.
Read our guide to find out why growth marketers should make sure CTV is part of their 2026 media mix.
⚖️ Italy Blocks Meta’s WhatsApp AI Chatbot Ban

What: Italy’s antitrust authority ordered Meta to pause its new WhatsApp policy that blocks third-party AI chatbots like ChatGPT or Claude from using WhatsApp’s business API. The ban, set for January, only targets general-purpose AI assistants, not business customer-service bots.
Why: Regulators fear Meta is leveraging WhatsApp’s dominance to favor its own Meta AI, squeezing out competitors and limiting user choice. With the EU also investigating, this could set a precedent for how big tech controls access to AI on popular platforms.
Impact: If platforms like WhatsApp become walled gardens for AI, innovation could stall, leaving users with fewer options and less control. Is your favorite AI assistant welcome everywhere… or only where Meta says yes?
Italy’s move is a warning shot to tech giants playing gatekeeper in the AI race. As regulators dig deeper, the big question remains: will AI thrive in open markets or get locked behind corporate walls?
